Well, let's face it; this isn't the original Super Garrys Mod Server.
What we built here, with the same community, in the span of a few hours & with a few dollars was a mere depiction of what could've been, had the server been under better management. However, this isn't something that Console could allow to happen.
Console has a consistent history of never listening to his community, twisting the words of his critics, and neglecting his server.
However, one has to wonder... When does a server owner cross the line?Â
Let's talk about user safety. Here is what Super Garrys Mod Server's report system looks like from the inside, to this day!
Pay attention to this piece of code, which prints out the reports from the users in the admin's game console, which get completely flushed alongside other game logs.
This is how seriously moderators treat reports within the server. Raising awareness about issues became almost impossible. Contributing to the fact is their "closed-invite" Discord server, requiring special invitations from a member of the moderation team. However, the same moderation team, being limited in resources, was not always able to cover most active hours.
Circumventing this problem would simply involve creating an actual report system, which should be nothing out of the ordinary for the server owner, considering that he wrote over 60 custom lua files for the server already. However, this solution wasn't entertained.
The moderation situation got bad enough that it reached a breaking point within the community, resulting in drastic measures and an incredible meltdown over a real issue being treated incorrectly: inappropriate sprays.
Former Super Garrys Mod Server player "Janky" confronted Console about it on Discord. Instead of answering with concern, care or any understanding, the server owner decided to permanently ban Janky, and engaged in deceitful conversations with the rest of the community over what had happened.
As seen above, Console took the criticism directed towards his management style, and openly shaped it into a narrative that cast him as a victim.
Instead of taking the time to find a proper solution, or creating the tool required to view spray ownership (which he would make later on), he took a somewhat drastic measure: Removing sprays altogether.
Much later, a private fix was created, which hooked up spray creation to Discord, allowing moderators to monitor spray usage in the server.
This action, however, did not come without a cost. By then, fellow long-time server members had rallied to argue Janky's ban, leading to a massive protest being made, in the form of a server boycotting known within the community as the Migration. These same people, who once loved the server, decided it would be within their best interest to pursue their endeavours in another server, Friendly Garry's Mod Community.
These dissatisfied players organized on FGC, and they remained a coherent group on the server until Janky was unbanned, at which time they ceased the boycott and returned to play on the server. Later on, with the arrival of a new & improved server, a community still desperate for change began to migrate once more.
The new server's premise is simple; hold on to the values that made Super Sandbox so nostalgic, while adding in the touch of communication that it needed for so long. Same LUA, same UI, but more staff, event planners and a few people to act as listening ears for suggestions. :D
